Immune Dysfunction
| A major dysfunction in DS is associated with the immune system. Many studies have documented low IgA, low white cell counts, and low levels of T-cells. All contributing to the increase upper respiratory infections, ear and gastrointestinal infections seen in DS. These immune system dysfunctions seem to be due to depleted zinc levels and the direct action of hydrogen peroxide on cell membranes. |
