The Thyroid Solution : A Mind-Body Program for
Beating Depression and Regaining Your Emotional and Physical Health
by Ridha Arem
One in ten Americans suffers from thyroid dysfunction, yet most
don't realize the mental and emotional components of this condition. "This is the
first book to explain the hidden suffering that many patients have difficulty expressing
and the first book to provide new ways of helping address and heal this suffering,"
promises author Ridha Arem, M.D., associate professor of medicine at Baylor College of
Medicine and chief of endocrinology and metabolism at Ben Taub General Hospital, both in
Houston, Texas. This book explains the link between stress and thyroid imbalance; how
thyroid imbalance affects your emotions, sex life, and relationships; and how to cope with
the effects of this imbalance. Because thyroid problems primarily strike women, a whole
section deals with women's health issues, such as infertility, miscarriage, postpartum
depression, premenstrual syndrome, and menopause. Another section provides practical
tools, such as evaluating lab tests and self-diagnosis techniques, dealing with treatment
problems and side effects, and preventing memory lapses and depression. The book covers
lifestyle choices that affect thyroid health, such as diet, supplementation, and exercise.
Frequent case studies (usually told as first-person narratives), checklists, and
questionnaires help to simplify the material and make it easier to check the medical
information against your own situation. Each chapter ends with "valuable points to
remember," making review easy. If you suffer from thyroid imbalance, or think you
might, this book could be a valuable resource. --Joan Price
Keep Your Brain Alive: 83 Neurobic Exercises

WHAT THIS BOOK HAS TO OFFER
We feel this book offers anyone who fears that their mental strength
and flexibility will seriously fade as they grow older the chance to take some control
over the process. In just the same way that you can exercise your body with aerobics and
cross training to fight off the effects of physical aging, you can use neurobic exercises
to keep your mind stronger for longer. The exercises are scientifically based on the
latest research from leading neurobiology labs around the world including Larry Katz
own research in the Dept. of Neurobiology lab at the Duke University Medical Center. The
exercises are deceptively simple but if done on a regular basis as part of everyday
activities they will help keep your mind fit to meet any challenge whether its
remembering a name or where you left the car keys, to mastering a new computer program or
staying creative in your work.
The exercises use your five senses in unexpected ways that shake up
your daily routines. Its not at all like having to sit down with paper and pencil to
do what can be an intimidating puzzle or word game. Neurobics have been developed to be
easy, fun and offbeat. But like any form of exercise they have to be done with some
regularity to be effective.
How and why they work is explained in the book. We have a web site
about neurobics. If you have questions or comments, wed love to hear from you.

Woman Awake : Feminine Wisdom for Spiritual Life
by Regina Sara Ryan
When former Catholic nun Regina Sara Ryan set out to find the feminine side of God, she didn't exactly expect a
face-to-face meeting. But as she began to approach exemplars
of feminine spirituality, she found herself invited warmly
into the world of the Divine Feminine. In "Woman Awake,"
Ryan recounts her experiences with 24 great women from
across the spiritual spectrum, among them Joan Halifax of
Zen, Irina Tweedie of Sufism, Mother Tessa Bielecki of
Christianity, Lalitha of Baul tantra, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross,
plain old humanitarian. Whether it be the path of service,
solitude, art, the body, or the warrior, each woman
manifests the Divine Mother in a unique and challenging way.
Ryan, a tireless seeker, sees these women's lives and
teachings in the light of wider spiritual and women's
concerns while also weaving separate patterns of female
deities and past masters, such as Tara, Kali, Hildegard, and Mirabai. As Ryan points out, waking up is a fearsome
confrontation with our own complacency. "Woman Awake"
sounds the alarm.
