Mind/Body
Medicine

|
Mind/Body medicine may refer to the way our
thoughts, emotions, as well as behaviors affect our health. It also may
refer to the mind/body interventions that we use to support health.
The National Institutes of Health counts mind/body medicine
as a major category of alternative medicine. Some of the most commonly
used mind/body therapies are biofeedback, meditation, hypnosis, psychotherapy,
visualization, and spiritual healing. "Mindfulness," however, is
a self practice that allows us to slow down and move with equanimity through a
constantly changing world.
Following are some books and websites that perhaps will get
you "thinking" about this vibration in the spectrum of health care!

Catastrophe Living : Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face
Stress,
Pain, and Illness
by
Jon Kabat-Zinn
Kabat-Zinn, founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of
Massachusetts Medical Center, is perhaps the best-known proponent of using
meditation to help patients deal with illness. (The somewhat confusing title is
from a line in Zorba the Greek in which the title character refers to the
ups and downs of family life as "the full catastrophe.") But this book
is also a terrific introduction for anyone who has considered meditating but was
afraid it would be too difficult or would include religious practices they found
foreign. Kabat-Zinn focuses on "mindfulness," a concept that involves
living in the moment, paying attention, and simply "being" rather than
"doing." While you can practice anything "mindfully," from
taking a walk to cleaning your house, Kabat-Zinn presents several meditation
techniques that focus the attention most clearly, whether it's on a simple
phrase, your breathing, or various parts of your body. The book goes into detail
about how hospital patients have either improved their health or simply come to
feel better despite their illness by using these techniques, but these
meditations can help anyone deal with stress and gain a calmer outlook on life.
"When we use the word healing to describe the experiences of people
in the stress clinic, what we mean above all is that they are undergoing a
profound transformation of view," Kabat-Zinn writes. "Out of this
shift in perspective comes an ability to act with greater balance and inner
security in the world." --Ben Kallen
Mind
Body Medicine : How to Use Your Mind for Better Health
by Daniel Goleman,
Joel Gurin (Contributor)
This book on how thoughts and emotion affect your health combines
consumer-oriented pragmatic advice with a solid research base. Edited by a New
York Times behavioral science writer and a Consumer Reports science editor, the
book discusses the connection between stress and disease; the mind's role in
pain, heart disease, cancer, and other ailments; and mind/body approaches to
health. Illustrated
When Things Fall Apart : Heart Advice for Difficult Times
by Pema Chodron
Much like Zen, Pema Chodron's interpretation of Tibetan
Buddhism takes the form of a nontheistic spiritualism. In When Things Fall
Apart this head of a Tibetan monastery in Canada outlines some relevant and
deceptively profound terms of Tibetan Buddhism that are germane to modern
issues. The key to all of these terms is accepting that in the final analysis,
life is groundless. By letting go, we free ourselves to face fear and obstacles
and offer ourselves unflinchingly to others. The graceful, conversational tone
of Chodron's writing gives the impression of sitting on a pillow across from
her, listening to her everyday examples of Buddhist wisdom.
THE
RELAXATION RESPONSE
by Herbert Benson, MD
With millions of
copies in print, THE RELAXATION RESPONSE has remained the definitive work on
stress and the mind/body connection since its publication in 1975.
The book defines
the relaxation response, a simple meditative technique that has helped millions
to cope with the physical effects of stress. This revitalizing, therapeutic
technique - tested by Dr. Benson in the laboratories of Harvard Medical School
and Boston's Beth Israel Hospital - can release your body's hidden defenses
against stress and stress-triggered illnesses, including high blood pressure.
Once learned, the
relaxation response takes only ten to twenty minutes a day and, as millions have
already discovered, can relieve the stress that can interfere with a rich,
fuller, healthier life.

BEYOND THE RELAXATION RESPONSE
by Herbert Benson, MD
The groundbreaking
best seller, THE RELAXATION RESPONSE, published in 1975, first put forth Dr.
Herbert Benson's definition of the relaxation response - a simple, effective,
self-healing meditation technique for reducing the detrimental effects of the
stress we live with every day. In BEYOND THE RELAXATION RESPONSE, he describes
remarkable new methods for extending the mind's power to heal the body - methods
that need to be practiced only a few minutes a day - at home, in the office,
even while exercising.
After clinical
observation and headline-making studies of Tibetan monks in the Himalayas - all
of which are described here in detail - Dr. Benson has proved that a belief in a
healing power either inside yourself or out, when combined with the relaxation
response and sound medical care, can measurably, dramatically improve your
health - relieving back pain, headaches, hyperventilation and panic attacks,
insomnia, hypertension and other harmful effects of stress.
Dr. Benson devotes
a major portion of this breakthrough book to a practical, individualized guide,
describing exactly how to harness personal healing power while jogging, walking,
swimming, while lying in bed, or during prayer, and how to integrate these
instructions with modern medicine.
"DR. BENSON SHOWS US
THAT BELIEF CAN HEAL US NOT ONLY SPIRITUALLY, BUT PHYSICALLY AS WELL."--
Jack Canfield, co-author, Chicken Soup for the Soul.
The #1
best-selling author of The Relaxation Response demonstrates with scientific
evidence how belief can heal. The vast majority of complaints patients bring to
their doctors could be self-healing. At a time when more and more people are
seeking spiritual comfort for their health concerns, renowned Harvard Medical
School Associate Professor Herbert Benson has written Timeless Healing to show
how, by activating neurological pathways of "remembered wellness," we
can alleviate up to 60 percent of our medical ailments.
Drawing on 25
years as a physician and researcher, Dr. Benson reveals that humans are not only
nourished by meditation and prayer, but are "wired for
God"--genetically designed to believe in a higher power. Patients can, with
the help of their doctors, employ their beliefs and other self-care methods to
heal over many medical problems.
Timeless Healing
proposes a blueprint for health that incorporates both the latest advances of
modern medicine and the age-old healing power of our beliefs.
"Herbert
Benson has been and remains a leader in mind/body medicine. Timeless Healing is
an excellent presentation of all we need to know." -- Bernie Siegel, M.D.,
author of Love, Medicine, and Miracles
"The faith
community has long awaited validation by the scientific world. Here it is."
-- Marianne Williamson
"Herb
Benson's own vibrant spirit and the grace of his writing, his inspiring vision,
and his disciplined grounding all make Timeless Healing a tonic for our diseased
times." -- Thomas Moore, author of Care for the Soul
"Any clinician who
treats women should read this book. In fact, every woman should give one to her
doctor. An inspiring books that shows how treating the whole woman can really
make a difference." -- Steven E. Locke, M.D., chief of Behavioral Medicine.
Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, author of The Healer Within
At Harvard Medical
School's Division of Behavioral Medicine, Alice Domar, Ph.D., has developed
singular, scientifically sound mind/body methods for women and demonstrated
their effectiveness with groundbreaking research. Thus, HEALING MIND, HEALTHY
WOMAN offers a new repertoire of therapeutic methods to two broad groups of
women: those who wish to protect and enhance their health, and those who are
suffering from specific health problems.
Each chapter
contains stories of women who have achieved remarkable success in Dr. Domar's
programs. HEALING MIND, HEALTHY WOMAN inspires readers with the message that
they can use the mind/body connection to seize control of their health and
well-being.
HEALING MIND
HEALTHY WOMAN first describes a spectrum of techniques for stress management and
wellness for all women. It then sets forth programs tailored for women with a
wide range of conditions, devoting one chapter to each:
 | PMS |
 | Infertility
 | Miscarriage and high-risk pregnancy
 | Menopause
 | Eating disorders
 | Breast cancer and gynecologic cancer
Endometriosis and pelvic pain |

Imagine
an insomnia treatment that improves sleep in 100% of insomniacs, helps 75% of
insomniacs become normal sleepers, and allows 90% of insomniacs to reduce or
eliminate sleeping pills. This treatment is safe, natural and has no side
effects except improved mood, higher energy, increased mind/body control, and
better health. No, this is not a new miracle drug. It is the drug-free insomnia
program developed and tested at Harvard Medical School by Dr. Gregg D. Jacobs
and described in his book Say Good Night to Insomnia (Henry Holt and Company,
1999). Dr. Jacobs's program is the first and only drug-free program
scientifically proven to conquer insomnia.
"Insomniacs
everywhere finally have a safe, highly effective alternative to sleeping pills.
I am confident that this program will change your life as it has for so many of
Dr. Jacobs' patients." -- Dr. Herbert Benson, Associate Professor of
Medicine, Harvard Medical School and author of The Relaxation Response and
Timeless Healing

Jacobs' book is a medical miracle-a breakthrough program with the scientifically
proven power to help you sleep again." -- Dr. Joan Borysenko, author of the
New York Times bestseller Minding the Body, Mending the Mind.
Dr. Gregg D.
Jacobs is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, a
Senior Research Scientist with Harvard Medical School's Mind/Body Medical
Institute, and an Insomnia Specialist in the Sleep Disorders Center at Beth
Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical
