Poor Lipid Metabolism

|
It is well documented that DS has problems with the
metabolism of lipids. Since every cell's membrane is made up of lipids, the very
vitality and communicative functions are dependent on adequate lipid availability.
These dysfunctions are due to:
 | Decrease in Omega 3 (ALA) and 6 (AA) Fatty Acids
|
 | Increase in cholesterol that does not contribute to cardiovascular
disease
|
 | Abnormal Apolipoproteins A, B, E that probably aide the increase seen in
Alzheimer's disease
|
 | Even though DHA is not a problem in DS, supplementation has shown
improvements in brain and retinal development in "normal children" so
supplementation is suggested in DS
